Following a calm trading session, benchmark indices continued to extend their gains as Indian stock markets ended Tuesday, August 19, 2025, on a positive note. The Nifty 50 ended at 24,980.65, just below the 25,000 mark, up 0.42%, while the Sensex ended at 81,644.39, up 370 points (0.46%). At 55,865.15, the Nifty Bank index closed up 0.47% as well.

Adani Ports and Tata Motors lead the rally.

With Tata Motors and Adani Ports both rising by almost 3%, autos and ports were the day's best performers. The indices also received strong support from industry titans like Hindustan Unilever, Tech Mahindra, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Reliance Industries, and Eternal.

Markets are weighed down by financials and certain largecaps.

Conversely, the upside was limited by selling pressure in certain largecap and financial names. Among the session's major laggards were Bajaj Finserv, HDFC Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, Power Grid, and L&T.

Performance by sector

The majority of sectoral indices saw an increase in value. Metals and banking stocks contributed to the momentum, and Nifty Auto, FMCG, and Media all saw gains of about 1%. But the only significant loser was Nifty Pharma, which fell 0.34%.

Leading sectoral movers

  • Aquaculture stocks topped the sectoral charts with a 7.7% increase.
  • Plastics increased 3.1%, while auto ancillaries and infrastructure increased 2.8% and 2.6%, respectively.
  • Intraday trading saw a 2.3% increase in the sugar industry.

Best and worst performing groups

Group performance remained mixed. Indiabulls Group led with a 5.4% rise, followed by Anil Ambani Group (5%), Jaypee Group (4.2%), and Garware (3.2%). Meanwhile, Muthoot Group slipped 0.8%, Patodia fell 1.2%, Manipal declined 1.9%, and Nagarjuna Group tumbled 3.9%, making it the worst performer of the day.
